We use these type of defense and unit distributions commonly for all castles and outposts.

You can choose regular defense according to your castle's level and equipment value.
Rubie tools are having some more powers than resources tools.
Defense using rubies tools:
Using rubies tools for defense, we use one flank to defend left or right same as using in resources tools defense. as given in the image.
Here you can notice that i used minimum 12 defense tools (Bulwark for 3 slots and Tar pitch kettle for 1 slot) in each slot at one side flank only and also deployment of soldiers to same side 100%.
You can also use 2 sides defense using rubie tools but that will be risky while you are offline. So i suggest you to use only one side defense.
Unit distribution ratio can be used mostly (given on image)
65% melee and 35% ranged
OR
65% ranged and 35% melee
You can use Swamp Snapper for moat protection.
Tips:
- 4 tools needed in each slot for defending 1 full attack.
- If you have 3 slots at one side then use all for bulwark, same also if you have 2 slots.
- Using minimum 12 tools in each slot will assure you that you have enough tools to defend 3 full attacks at same time.
- If you are online and an incoming attack is of normal tools then you can defend it 2 flanks also.
- If you will stop the attack at 2 sides of wall then you will get +30% bonus to fight in courtyard.
- When you will stop the attacker at one side, the attacker will get 0% bonus for fight, and you can win the battle in courtyard according to your castellan equipment and defender numbers.
