Resources are used in particular for constructing and upgrading buildings and tools.
And there are different types of resources and buildings.
Resources:
You only have limited amount of resources per castle. The first three plants always produce at thier maximum rate. Once the local limit have been exceeded each additional plant of the same type will have a lower workload and therefore produces less.
Buildings:
You can build new buildings from construction menu.
You can upgrade any building, can move it anywhere and even demolish it to make room and retrieve some building materials.
The upgraded level of your keep determines that how quickly your building are constructed and upgraded.
